He is currently wanted at Julliard for his skill with the violin (after the director heard him play in a subway), which he refuses, not being sure if that is the direction he wishes to take for his life and studies computer programming because he wants to make his own games to play for himself. As for his work situation it looks no better. Since he stays on his own he has to pay living expenses, so he works part time. However Kai has a tendency to get bored with his job or find something more appealing somewhere else (whichever comes first), thus he never stays in one job for very long, the longest being 3 months and the shortest being an afternoon. He loves to experience new things and he expresses this aspect of his personality in his working experience. He has done almost everything imaginable: being a waiter (in multiple establishments), bartender, construction worker, butler, accountant intern (for a very shady company), janitor (at NYU which didn’t do much for his reputation there), bodyguard (got fired from that job because he slept as his client was attacked), secretary and even playing violin in the subway for cash to name but a few. This behavior pattern of his has been of a particular interest to the psychology students and there is even a few bets going on around campus as to how long he will hold a job and which will be his next. In the last 2 years since entering USA he has had about 15 jobs, earning him the reputation as the Job Hunter. He is currently working for a bicycle delivery service downtown, where is known as the fastest delivery guy in NY (current employment length: 3 weeks and counting). ○ Living Situation Luckily for Kai (though it irritates him) his father sends him money to pay for tuition and accommodation on campus. He is currently looking for an apartment to get away from his father’s influence but with his job hopping it does not seem like it will be anytime soon. ○ Appearance Kai has a normal yet deceptive body structure. He stands at an above-average height of five feet and 11 inches weighing in at 166 pounds. He has a slender build made even more apparent by the clothing he wears. But despite his own slender design his body is completely athletic. He possess not an inch of fat, every muscle in his body at optimal condition from his years of jujitsu and kendo and it possesses innate flexibility and agility from his free running, parkour and air blading days.
In Japanese culture Kai would be described as a bishounen, a naturally handsome young man despite his own lack of effort into maintaining his appearance. His long, shoulder length, purple locks possess a unique cut that is neck length at the back but increase to shoulder length in the front, with his bangs hanging defiantly over his smooth but defined straight facial features. His smooth face and long hair give him a somewhat feminine appearance. His eyes appear to be purple at first glance but when seen at an angle or if hit by light in a certain way they appear to illuminate with a red hue in them, made even more apparent by his smooth white skin. It’s his beauty (feminine appearance and all) and sleeping habits that gave him another nickname on campus as the Sleeping Adonis much to his horror.
Kai grew up in Japan’s moderate weather and as such is not used to New York’s cold weather. He wears a variety of jeans (mostly torn), with a shirt and a coat, usually with a hoody underneath the coat, in the winter. Despite being Japanese he enjoys wearing a British punk style with the focus on his torn-up jeans and All-Stars, with various dark coloured t-shirts, checked-shirts and jackets completing the attire. He has on occasion been known to clean up well, wearing semi-formal clothing, such as standard jeans, a labeled t-shirt or good shirt and a well cut blazer, and of course his All-Stars. One thing Kai loves besides his sneakers is accessories. He always wears any sort of jewelry, wristband or leather strap around his wrists and he always wears multiple necklaces around his neck as well. Every now and then he wears the white cotton muffler Yukari made for him, especially on windy days.
PART 02 SPECIFICS ○ Possible Affinities Air, Fire, Spirit ○ Personality Kai’s personality can only be described as an enigma. The best metaphor that can be used to relate to him is that of the wind. Like the wind that changes and flows without restraint, so too does Kai’s personality. One moment he could be having a casual conversation with you and the next he could be staring off into space, his mind adrift a river of thought, with him no longer recognizing your presence near him anymore or so it seems. It’s not to say that he has multiple personalities or anything, or possesses mood swings. It’s just that he chooses to show different facets of his complex personality a fraction at a time, at any time, with no inhibitions or social norms playing into any factor of his thought process.
Kai is enigmatic, aloof and stoic. He usually keeps to himself and enjoys his own company, often being found watching the sky, reading manga, sleeping somewhere unexpected or on rare occasions playing his violin. This gives him the loner characteristic but doesn’t accurately describe him. It’s not that Kai dislikes other people or his shy of social company; on the contrary, it’s just that he enjoys the quiet stillness of everything around him (ironic considering he lives in one of the nosiest and busiest cities in the world), the freedom of moving where the wind takes him and most importantly feeling the breeze on his skin and through his hair. There is no way another person could understand these simple delicacies he enjoys nor does he wish to educate them about it, besides he finds humans to be noisy and an unnatural occurrence in the world (again ironic considering he is a human himself).
It is these factors of his personality that give him an aura of mystery about him, also considering the fact that he rarely talks to people he finds boring (he considers most boring) and when he does he never talks about himself at all. He is not really a private person as such he just considers himself a boring topic to discuss, preferring to talk about others, though he refuses to talk about his past to anyone, people who pry tend to see a rare sliver of anger and irritation from him. Another reason people dub him mysterious is the fact that nobody has ever known what is going on in the mind of Kai. Due to his own stoic and aloof nature he rarely displays much emotion, often reacting only slightly too any given situation, the only exception to that being any humor he finds funny. He can sometimes also be slightly apathetic to his surroundings, responding slowly, oddly or even not at all at times. All these things give Kai somewhat of a dull appearance to others, causing others to make the mistake that he doesn’t take note of his surroundings at all. How far from the truth could they be. Kai is a highly perceptive individual who, despite his calm façade, is actually overflowing with activity internally. He is able to mentally take note of his surroundings, people’s actions and responses to a situation and can read people to a certain degree, while he could be processing a number of things in his mind simultaneously, unfortunately this too can sometimes add to his stereotype, being deep in thought while being none responsive to others around him.
Kai is a creature of emotion and passion, who tends to live life by his gut feeling rather than logic, despite the fact that he is highly intellectual and processes logical responses for various situations but chooses not to follow them if not to his liking. Since his mother’s death Kai has been living the way he has wanted to, out if the norm. He goes where he wants, how he wants and when he wants. Following where the wind takes him, truly personifying himself as a free spirit. He yearns for true freedom, a life where he can truly feel alive, where the world’s problems can’t reach him. For Kai he finds this freedom in the sky and always dreams of being able to soar through the heavens above, hence his obsession with the wind and sky and his constant day dreaming. He also he enjoys the thrill of adrenaline, often trying out new extreme sports or stunts, using these activities to temporarily give him freedom from life’s chains. This led to his interest in free running and parkour which eventually led to his creation of air blading.
A unique thing about Kai is that he is a jack-of-all-trades. Due to his own curious and eccentric nature he loves trying out new things (which is the reason he is currently job hopping at the moment) and surprisingly he learns things at an unnatural pace, mastering whatever he does very quickly before moving on to the next thing. Some have even claimed that he might be a genius, though he claims that he just has a more willing, adaptive mind than most.
When it comes to interacting with other people, Kai enjoys listening rather than talking but when he does speak he generally speaks with all honesty. He enjoys keeping secrets but will speak the truth, most of the time, if not some cryptic truth mixed in between. He is usually friendly, kind and sweet when talking to people. He does enjoy teasing people, displaying a playful naughtiness every now and then, especially to ‘innocent’ individuals. He is not above playful flirting with women, being quite confident in himself, though he tends not to open up his heart to anyone, which is the reason why he doesn’t call anybody his friend. Kai can be selfless at times and is protective of those he cares for willing to go to any length for them; ofcourse becoming somebody he cares for is another story. The only people Kai has cared for being his mother, whom he still plays violin for in her memory and Yukari, his childhood friend, whose muffler he wears to remember her.
One flaw that Kai does display is indecisiveness. When it comes to making big or important decisions he tends to withdraw from the situation completely or if forced to make a choice simply makes one on a whim, trying not to think about the consequences. This aspect of his personality is the direct result from decisions he made in his past that caused others around him to get hurt. He also tries not to plan or think about the future, rather going by impulse believing life to be more interesting that way.
Kai does have a darker side to his personality, one which he recently discovered and one which he fears will become more apparent in the future. It is also this side of him that causes him not to draw emotionally near to people close to him for fear of hurting them, but mostly fear of them abandoning him once they see the ugly truth. Kai has an innate violent side to him. He has a hunger for a rush, the thrill of excitement and blood pumping adrenaline. He initially satisfied this feeling with his extreme living and open ended lifestyle but on one occasion when he was forced to resort to violence against a person, experiencing a rush he never felt in his life. His life before then felt pale in comparison, he felt truly alive dealing pain to another. Overwhelming the weak with his own power was a joy to him. He discovered that he enjoyed violence and fighting, so much so that it scared him, causing him to avoid violence whenever possible. Even now his scared that he will unleash that monster into the world, but the thing that scares him the most is that he wants to.
○ History Kai has gone by many names, alias or persona over his life but at one time he was just known as Kai Katsuragi, the only son of Haruka and Toshiro Katsuragi in Tokyo, Japan. He was born into a wealthy, prestigious family with his father owning a well respected Japanese medical corporation and his mother being a famous violin player. Being born into such a well respected family meant that expectations were set upon him from the moment he could open his eyes, constantly being enforced and reminded to him daily by his father. His father began grooming him into the perfect successor for his corporation early on, giving him personal tutors in academics, politics, business, and even kendo and jujitsu. Kai’s whole childhood had been planned and prepared for him without his consent and he had no choice but to accept and follow. The light in Kai’s world during those years was his compassionate mother. Haruka was always kind and gentle to her son, never burdening him with pressures and expectations. She was the one who taught him to play the violin to help escape and was also the one who started his fascination with the sky and freedom, often telling him stories about the wind and sky.
When Kai entered elementary school he soon became one of the popular students due to his athletic ability, good grades and good looks. Despite being well liked at school he soon began to realize that there too expectations were expected from him. He had to fit the mold as top student whether he wanted to or not and the other kids also only admired him from a distance never truly trying to connect closer with him. To compound matters Kai found himself being bullied by those who were jealous of his social standing. Despite possessing martial arts he never resorted to it, thinking it pointless and scared of ruining his father’s reputation. This cycle continued on until his last year of elementary.
It was during the holidays before he was to enter middle school that tragedy struck for Kai as his mother had been diagnosed with 3rd stage breast cancer and that she would not last until he attended middle school. On her death bed her last words would play a profound effect on Kai’s life…,”The sky is your kingdom, and the wind is your wings. Discover your own freedom and live by it.” This would become the motto in which Kai would live his life and as he entered middle school his life changed dramatically, no longer did he abide by other’s expectations or desires. He lived for himself, by himself. On his first day in middle school he witnessed those same bullies that picked on him, abusing a girl student on her way to school. Unlike his old self, his first act as his new self was to rescue the girl, utilizing his martial arts training to immobilize the bullies. The bullies, shocked that Kai possessed such skill were further surprised when he offered his apologies for making the exception today and beating them up, explaining that he couldn’t stand by and watch an innocent girl get hurt, and told them that from tomorrow onwards they will go back to norm with them picking on him again. The bullies were shocked by Kai’s new attitude and skill, deciding to rather follow and hang around with him instead. As for the girl she thanked Kai and introduced herself as Yukari, a student from north of Japan. So from then onwards Kai began his own ‘gang’, hanging out with the delinquents that used to bully him now seeing him as an unique enigma and began skipping classes, sleeping through classes and joining every single society he could before moving to the next one. Kai eventually was classified as a delinquent himself because of his behavior, with the students avoiding him now, with the exception of Yukari. She was the sole person who cared not for his reputation but rather for the person he was and they became good friends in time. It was also in middle school that Kai developed his taste for free running and parkour, running through the streets and buildings of Tokyo. This also led to a conflict with his father constantly, straining the relationship even further.
By the time he entered high school he already had his own crew that followed him and was being called Sora by his companions, because of his tendencies to stare up at the sky constantly during his free time. It was in high school that he created the sport Air Blading, combining roller blading with the tricks and maneuvers of parkour and free running. Air Blading eventually caught on establishing its own underground society, with different crews competing for money and rep. Kai was the best and was well known for always pushing the limit, going higher and faster than others. Unfortunately the sport became more violent with crews starting to use violence in the competitions against each other. Kai simply ignored the others and continued on his own way. His stand to stay true to the original style earned him contempt from others who were jealous of him and his following. One of the more violent crews challenged him to a duel. Kai refused not wanting to take part in such a farce. Feeling shamed the leader of the opposing crew decided to teach Kai a lesson by targeting those close to him, and that only one being Yukari. They attacked her Christmas Eve as she was shopping for Kai’s present, injuring her in the process which caused her to be paralyzed in both legs. Outraged Kai found the members of the crew and in one night put all of them in the hospital with serious wounds. It was then that he discovered his own dark nature and when he began distancing himself from others. To make matters worse Yukari didn’t blame him, giving him his trademark muffler as a Christmas present instead, causing him to feel even guiltier about her condition. His father upset and infuriated by his behavior and shame, deciding to disown him and send him to New York, which he agreed to, allowing him to start anew. After he graduated from high school he immediately left Japan, only leaving a note behind for Yukari.
In New York he began fresh, signing up with NYU and starting his job hopping campaign.
