The masterful creations of the world’s top chefs displayed like trophies among the many tables simply augmented the exquisite décor that gave this party the sense of aristocracy that it rightfully deserved. The soft hum of people’s voices hung over the huge ballroom with the delicate sound of the string quartet playing gently in the background music provided the adequate tone and mood to the festivity. All in all this was pretty much boring for a certain young detective standing alone at a buffet table. Seemingly deciding whether to taste the king sized prawns or the steamed lobster, Marcus’ attention was everywhere but the expensive food before him. Yes…food was the least of Marcus’ concerns tonight. He had bigger fish to fry so to speak. Finally deciding on neither of the edible delicacies he left the buffet table, instead walking around the ballroom aimlessly with no particular purpose in mind, while at least that is how it would appear to anybody else that noticed him. Despite the cool, charming exterior he was currently displaying to the nobles and ladies all around him, his mind was clocking in overtime. Constantly he was scanning the room, looking for any suspicious behaviour or even better a suspicious person, though he knew it wouldn’t be that easy, it never was. He loosened the black silk tie around his neck, trying to ease the irritation it constantly caused on his neck. Even after all these years he still had trouble dressing in formal attire, especially when it came to a black tie event such as this. When Anna heard he was coming to this event for an undercover assignment she pounced on the opportunity to play dress up with the young detective. She was the one that choose this outfit for him, which consisted of a well cut black suit, blazer unbuttoned of course and a plain white shirt, with a silk black tie and matching shoes to top it off. His hair was also brushed back, looking somewhat uncharacteristically neat and tidy. She claimed he looked handsome but in his own opinion he looked like the poster boy for a bodyguard or wannabe assassin, ironically being the fact that his undercover identity is that of an assassin. Of course nobody in this type of crowd, that being New York’s elite would ever know the name of Ghost. So for now he would be going under the name Alex Gate, a somewhat successful importer in the eastern sea-board. Once again he fiddled with his tie, damn that woman. Just because she was older than him by a few years and was his senior partner, gave her no excuse to treat him like a little brother. Her upbeat, cheerful demeanour irritated him slightly and what irritated him even more was the fact that she was unreadable to him. He never knew what the woman was thinking, she was completely unpredictable. He prided himself on knowing what goes on inside others minds but Annabelle Heartland was completely off his radar, whether she asked to be his partner when he refused, or her random visits to his apartment to check up on him, she had always surprised him. Just thinking about her made him tired as he took a glass of champagne from a passing waiter. He knew he wasn’t supposed to drink on the job but he figured he’d make an exception this time. He once again scanned the room as he now stood still beside the staircase that led up to the upper levels of this mansion. All the big shots were here, each one trying to flex their power and influence on the other. Making various deals, trades, partnerships and even a few blackmails was the order of the day and behind all those fake smiles were the hearts of predators. He raised an eyebrow when he recognized a few men in the crowd. He saw the Willis trio among a circle of people, the father and his two sons were well known around in New York, even Marcus had seen them a few times in on T.V. Another big name, probably considered a legend in these parts, Charles Aegis, was in a heated discussion with fellow elites. The self-made billionaire was a public figure worldwide, his riches and power well known by just about everyone. A perfect target, for any thief Aegis would be the Moby Dick of targets, they wouldn’t be able to resist the chance to rob him cold, and then again everyone in this room was a potential target for a clever or greedy thief. That was what Marcus was counting on. It was the reason he put on this charade and this damn suit. It was to lay this trap here, tonight. To finally catch this phantom thief that had been running amok in this city, his city. He would admit this phantom intrigued him. They were good, no excellent. Never leaving any evidence behind, never making a mistake, always flawless. Marcus was probably an admirer by now, but still he had a job to do and that meant chasing the rabbit all the way down the hole. He was actually pretty excited. He couldn’t wait for his first meeting with his suspect; he had things to ask them and truths that needed to be confirmed. He was wrapped up in his own thoughts so much that he even failed to notice the beautiful blonde casually addressing him; she had been trying to get his attention for the past few minutes. A charming smile suddenly appeared on his face as a heartfelt apology passed his lips before gracefully introducing himself, a masterful performance.
