date: last Friday of August (too lazy to pick a date...) time: 9.30 pm location: Bethesda Fountain, Central Park
For the past hour, Callum had been looking down at his cell phone, anxiously checking is phone for the time. It was practically a nervous twitch but he couldn't stop the action. Now matter how many dates he'd been on, no matter how many girls he's successfully wooed, Callum could never seem to shake the pre-date jitters. That's what he called them - the compulsive time checks - jitters. Despite his spotless record, an incredibly tiny voice in Callum's head always taunted and teased him, expecting him to fail. Maybe one of these days that little voice would be right, but Callum wouldn't count on it. With his spotless record, Callum had never been rejected, meaning he had never been stood up. It was the latter that the little voice prodded him with: the prolonged rejection. It was like a slap across the face and the destruction of an ego. No man wanted to be stood up which lead Callum to believe that it was this primal, male instinct that always whispered in his ear to expect the worse. It really was like having an annoying little fly buzzing next to your ear.
Pulling out his phone and looking down at its scree for what had to be at least the hundredth time, a smirk danced across his lips as the time blinked up at him in blue.
9:90
Stuffing the device back into his pocket for what Cal anticipated to be the last time, he could hardly contain his eagerness. His blue eyes sparkled as he looked up at the cloudless night sky. It was like entire universe wanted him to succeed. Despite being in New York City, you could still see the twinkle of the stars and the bright moon glowing in the sky. Hi gaze swiveled downward at the little picnic that he had laid out right next to the base of Bethesda Fountain - one of the most romantic places in the city.
A red and white checker blanket was laid out, a single candle lit in the middle of their 'table'. A whicker basket was sitting by Cal's feet but he quickly scooped it up and placed it on the edge of the blanket, safely away from the harm of his feet, though he did crouch down and flip open the lid, extracting an extremely critical element in winning Joze over.
What Cal held in his right hand was a flower. Just one single, perfect flower, it's petals glistening in the faint moonlight. It had taken Cal quite some time to decide on this flower - and whether to go with a bouquet or not - but he eventually selected the exotic beauty he held in his hands. It was an bright pink orchid, as beautiful and unique as the fair lady it was about to be presented to. No longer feeling jettery or anxious, Cal took a seat on the base of the fountain and waited for Joze, his signature smirk never leaving his face.

CREDITS template by jawn of AA, OTE, DMB and TC She had made a mad dash from work, as soon as the clock struck 9, she chucked her apron off and hung in, leaving the customers she was attending to her fellow coworkers, and made a run for it. Of course, she wasn't so lucky and her manager had asked questions. "Joze, where in the world are you going? You still have customers to attend to!" Joze honestly couldn't be bothered with this. Although she was usually relatively calm and cheery with her boss, today it was not the case. Couldn't he tell that she was in a hurry and needed to go now? Apparently now. She was held back another five minutes with her manager's probing questions, and although she did her best to maneuver her way out of this situation without giving the curious man the details, she gave up. She was ready to tell at the top of her lungs that she had a date with Callum Pierce. "I'm going to be late for a date! Please, let me go." To her surprise he actually complied. "Have fun, Joze!" Stupid old man. But she was glad for the dismissal, and resumed on to her mad dash to her bike. I should have enough time to make it. Riding her bike in her skirt was, say, uncomfortable, and riding this fast ensured that it flew up. "Damn skirt." She knew she shouldn't have worn it, it was a complete hindrance to her. But she couldn't possibly change now, her legs pumping furiously on the bike. Trying to make it there on time.
She really should have taken the public transit, but she hadn't gathered enough tips today, at least not enough to spare for herself. Her family needed all the money they could get. No one knew that better than her - and perhaps her brother. And probably her parents too. But her little sister remained ever the oblivious. Which made it absolutely crucial for Joze to make as much money as she could so that her little sibling could live a more normal life. At least, as much of a normal life as she could muster with two siblings fighting and the house divided. Which might be normal in the stereotypical world, but it sure wasn't common. Even if this was New York. She was frustrated with her living situation. She was frustrated with her life, work, school, everything. If anything, this date was the only thing she was looking forward to thus far. Then her busy schedule would begin again. Not that she was looking forward to it in any sense. Taking a glance at her watch as she neared the fountain, she found that she was on time. Not late, but not too early either. It was 9:25 and they were supposed to meet at 9:30. Twenty minute trip non-stop. She had five minutes - so she fixed her clothing, straightened her hair a bit, and caught her breath. And tried to calm the butterflies in her stomach.
The fountain was beautiful - but that was expected. Although Joze lived near the place, she had never really taken in it's beauty before, although she's seen enough pictures to get the general gist of it. The winged angel perched there, tall and proud, absolutely stunned her. The little children beneath her completed the piece almost that it left her breathless. At least, it snatched the last of her breath that had not been spent riding here. Well, there goes breathing easily. She was honestly saving her breath for Callum and the date, because she knew that she would probably be speechless, but there went that theory. She cleared her mind, remembering what she was here for and why she wasn't home quite yet. Hopefully Mom and Dad won't worry. Taking a deep breath, to even out her breathless lungs, and to calm herself, high tailing it to where she thought Callum was. At the base of the fountain he was sitting, and Joze couldn't help but gasp in shock.
A picnic? He had really thought this out, but he had been given three hours to prepare. So, she shouldn't be surprised. But she was. Had he really put this much effort into this date? It was unbelievable - but Joze couldn't help but feel incredibly pleased about this. No one had gone this far before, and she was delighted. |

Walking her bike in one hand, Joze strode toward him, gazing down at the little set up he had created. Hardly able to contain his enthusiasm, Callum leapt up to his feet and subconsciously straightened out his dress shirt before closing the distance between them.
Poor girl biked all the way here. Cal couldn't help but think as he noticed the faintest traces of pink on her cheeks. Either she was slightly out of breathe from her trip or she was blushing and neither option would surprise him.
"Hey." Cal purred, reaching forward and taking the bike from her grasp without asking for waiting for permission. There really was no need for her to work or worry about it any more, "How was you trip?" He asked, walking next to her with Joze's bike in one hand and the orchid in the other.
Leaning the bike up against the base of the fountain, Callum quickly turned around and faced Joze. He really looked at her for the first time this evening, taking in the way that the moon danced golden on her already bright blonde hair and how her eyes twinkled like sapphires. Joze really was, honest and truly, beautiful. Callum noticed the faintest traces of make-up on her already lovely face, making her eyes appear that much larger and her eyelashes long and dark. A thin coat of sheer lip gloss coated her lips and Callum began to imagine brushing his lips gently against his.
Catching himself staring, Callum shot up slightly straighter. Practically beaming, he extended the flower out toward her, "It reminded me of you." He confessed with a smile, noticing for the first time that the colour of its silky petals almost exactly matched Joze's full, pink lips.

NOTES your post is great! and sorry for any grammatical mistakes - it always happens to me because i don't proofread my posts. CREDITS template by jawn of AA, OTE, DMB and TC The scene was truly enchanting, and Joze honestly couldn't take her eyes off of it. Well, that is until the silky smooth voice of none other than Callum broke her train of thought. Her bike still in her hand. Worry was closing in her, but she knew she shouldn't be feeling this. Why was she so self conscious now? Her work clothes were nothing horribly fancy - if anything they looked pretty formal. If only she had gotten some more time after work - she would have dressed for something more suitable for this occasion. Looking at him again made her smile - even if it had only been three hours since their previous encounter. Just like she had predicted, she was breathless and obviously stunned. "Hi..." She trailed off as he took her bike from her. Then she noticed that he had dressed somewhat nicely, so Joze felt just that much better about her attire. "My trip...? Oh, it was a little tiring, that's all." Of course, she was lying. It was not just a little tiring - she had been riding her bike all the way from her workplace to here. Central Park was, surprisingly deserted, but it was 9, and it was pretty late. Oh well, just makes this whole affair that much more romantic... Hopefully on the trip her makeup managed to stay intact.
Today, Joze felt like a whole different person. She was actually caring on how she looked, how she presented herself, and she was above all else, nervous. And she could only trace the root of this so called problem to Callum. But she could hardly blame him - he couldn't possibly know the effect he had on her, right? That she was practically wrapped around his finger, even though they had only met today. He couldn't have planned this, and so she could hardly blame him. But why did Joze have to feel like a stupid girl with a stupid school girl crush? Maybe along the premise it was true - she was a school girl and this was pretty much a crush - but it was still incredibly infuriating to her that she had to act this way, flustered and incredibly vulnerable.
But it wasn't like she could help it, and it wasn't like he had an off button to how incredibly charming he was towards Joze. "Um... thank you." Why was she being shy? Not that she wasn't shy on a regular basis - but why was she this shy? She was mumbling - and blushing furiously. She could feel the heat on her cheeks, and she didn't need a mirror to tell how they were probably pink by now. She swore, she had already gone through this once before with Callum.
"It reminded me of you." A flower? It was undoubtedly beautiful - was he implying that he thought her beautiful? An orchid, for her? Not only was the flower beautiful and delicate, almost waiting to crumble beneath her fingers, but it was incredibly romantic. And the hopeless romantic in her was reassured of what a good decision this was. "Thank you... that's very considerate of you..." But fueled on by a new found confidence that Callum had so graciously (and probably unwittingly) provided her through the flower, Joze could not resist taking on a bolder side of conversation.
"But on a different note - I'm absolutely famished from work."

Her cheeks flamed up in embarrassment as she gently caressed it's exotic petals as if they would crumble at her touch. She really was a unique girl - biking alone at nine o'clock in the evening and making Cal practically beg to spend time together yet not above feeling embarrassment or shy when presented with thoughtful items. Callum had a sneaking suspicion that this little porcelain doll was not used to or comfortable with being doted on. Well, that made Callum's job easier.
Despite her remarkable restrain, if Joze was not used to being spoiled with affection, she would (eventually) be defenseless against Callum's charm. After much practice, Cal had practically mastered the art of seduction and was beginning to understand the innermost, sacred workings of the female mind... when it came to the hunt, that is. He could whisk damsels literally off their feet but once Cal became bored, he tossed women away like it was water off his back. So he understood their primal instincts and the burning desire for a 'Prince Charming' type character, but boyfriend Cal certain was not.... Not that Joze needed to know that.
Leading her toward the checkered blanket, Joze seemed to have a sudden burst of confidence, finally finding herself and shaking the timidness out of her, reminding Callum of the spirit that had initially captivated him. It was a shame that she would be the flavour of the week because Cal really did like her. But Que sera sera.
"Well, I hope that you won't be too disappointed." Callum cooed, referring to the contents of the wicker basket. He,extended a hand forward and showedJoze to her 'seat' across from him, "I'm not much of a cook." He confessed with a small laugh.
And that fact was undeniable. Cal could hardly boil water to make mac & cheese for crying out loud! That's why he headed home for a quick visit and had his absolutely wonderful younger brother make their dinner. Okay, so as close as Callum and his brother were, it did take some convincing and bribery on the eldest's part - namely having to do the dishes for a couple weeks. But it was going to be worth it because Chris Pierce made delectable finger sandwiches and positively sinful chocolate lava cake.

NOTES short post is short O.o CREDITS template by jawn of AA, OTE, DMB and TC Don't growl.... don't growl.... These thoughts were, of course, directed towards her stomach. The last thing she wanted was for it to growl - and even if she was hungry and fully admitted it to Callum, she still did not want to submit to something as simple as her stomach growling. Foolish as it was, she would probably embarrass herself in front of Callum and she was afraid it would make her even less appealing. Since when had she become such a girl?! Although she made no change to her composure (which was an incredibly hard feat), and her facial expressions remained on a permanent blush, she was practically scowling to herself on the inside. Why did he have this effect on her? It was still infuriating, and yet, she didn't mind it too much as long as she was with him. Which was sort of counterproductive, if one thought about it.
But her stomach grumbling wasn't something that she could really contain, thus before long she felt one coming along. Just my luck. So she instead focused on something other, trying to force herself to not think about her just about to growl stomach. Her mind fixated on the flower she was holding timidly in her hands, afraid of the delicacy of it. It's okay, it's stronger than it looks. But still she did not want to handle it roughly, gently placed in her hands. Although, it still did not hide the fact that she was hungry. So imagine how incredibly relieved she was when he started to lead her towards the picnic style blanket. She breathed a little sigh of relief. She wouldn't have to worry about her stomach any longer, or so she hoped.
Joze sat down where Callum indicated. Eager almost - though she took pains to try to hide it. It was official - she had become a girl almost overnight. Not even. "I'm sure you're just being modest. We'll see soon enough, anyways." |

The way Joze's big blue eyes lit up when she saw the little layout spoke volumes: she was flattered. Or impressed. Or both. Smirking and basking slightly in his assumed success, Callum took his seat across from Joze once she appeared comfortable and placed the orchid in her lap.
Joze really was a strange creature. As Callum's eyes casually looked her over, he couldn't help but wonder for the first time about her romantic experiences. Had she had many boyfriends? What type of guy did she find attractive (not that it mattered in this instance, clearly)? These questions breezed through Cal's mind, not that he would purse any of them,at least not yet. There was no need to scare Joze off. While she gently fingered the pink petals on the flower, Callum made a mental note to probe her about such things on a later date... And in Callum's mind, there would without a doubt be another date for Joze was not going to slip though his fingers.
Her melotic voice brought Callum back to reality as she defended him against his own critisism. He laughed, it was a hearty and sincere sound that vibrated deep in his chest. She really was too sweet for her own good, trying to defend Cal's less-than-mediocre culinary skills, "Really, hon. I'm being honest."
Still chuckling slightly, Cal leaned forward and pulled out a large, round tray (much like the ones used for High Tea). Neatly organized on the platter was an assortment of uniquely cut and delicious looking finger sandwiches; with the crusts cut off, of course. Growing up with Chris, Cal could honestly and truly say that the little sammies that lay on the plate were as good as they looked. Carefully, Callum placed the sandwiches in the middle of the blanket, next to the candle.
"Can I tell you a secret?" Callum asked, his voice light and teasing as he extracted two white plates out of the wicker basket and placed one infront of Joze before himself, "I had my brother make them."
Okay, so he knew it was a lame secret and as confident as Cal was, he loved taking compliments... but he refused to steal them, or accept ones that were simply untrue. Despite popular belief Callum Pierce did have morals... even if some of them were loose and up to interpritation.

CREDITS template by jawn of AA, OTE, DMB and TC Blush, try to hide giggle, look at Callum, feel nervous, repeat. That was all that this one little girl by the name of Josephine Atkins could think about. Darting through her mind were so many phrases, so many questions, so many statements - all mixed up to confused the girl tenfold. But Joze was trying to narrow it down - to tiny little comprehensible bits. In the process they became commands - just telling her what to do and what not to do for the sake of not embarrassing herself. But she knew that it was far from working, and she was letting her thoughts wander once again into not so important things. Like, how incredibly cute he looked - and how incredibly starving she was. She took a deep breath. Joze would figure this one out, it couldn't be that hard. After she got over the initial shock and butterflies in her stomach feeling it should be alright. But a bad thought came to her - what if it she would never get it over with? That was nonsense though. She would have to, sooner or later, and she was counting on sooner to get her head back on her shoulders. Properly. The spinning top it was now - well, soon to be.
Could she afford to be more dazed than she was already? More charmed and more effected under his charisma? It certainly felt nice - albeit she was a bit cautious and threading water at it, but it wasn't like it was unpleasant and that she was struggling. But first she had to get her mind off of Callum if she had any chance of regaining calm. And that was easier said than done. Surely she had more willpower than this. Even though he was incredibly handsome and she was having more than sinful thoughts at the moment, she tried to get a hold of herself. You're got to handle this. She could hear her stomach audibly grumbling as a tray of absolutely delicious looking finger sandwiches was presented. I really hope he didn't hear that. But despite that, she gave herself away with her furious blush, pink and spreading across her face. Although she wanted nothing more than to hide her face the only thing she could manage to do was stare at the sandwiches and restrain herself from just grabbing out and taking one. Which wouldn't be courteous or polite. But her mouth was probably watering at the sight of them, and she didn't think she'd be able to resist it for too long - and beside this was a dinner date. She was supposed to be eating.
But the fact was, she was nervous about eating in front of Callum. It was an irrational fear, something she shouldn't be worried about at all, but yet she was freaking out about it, and her mind was in a complete frenzy trying to figure out a solution. So much for calming down. But she was so preoccupied that she had almost missed what he had said - that his brother had made them for him. She honestly had no reply to that - but it wasn't like she cared as long as they ended up in her stomach somehow. But Joze nodded as a signal that she heard and understood him.
She watched as he had set the plate full of sandwiches near a candle - a candle which she hadn't noticed until now. And she watched as Callum took out two white plates from the basket, placing one near him and one near herself. And she couldn't help but hope that she would get to eat soon. |
